
Tigers Sink Truman State

COLUMBIA, Mo.- Both the Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Truman State on Friday night at the MU Natatorium in Columbia. The Tiger men hammered the Truman State Bulldogs by a score of 130-75 while the women got revenge from last year's loss to the defending NCAA Division II champions with a 136.5-67.5 victory.
Juniors Matt Ferrarelli and Radu Miclaus led the Mizzou men's team to victory on Friday night. Ferrarelli won both the 400 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. His time of 3:55.81 broke the MU Natatorium record, a mark that Ferrarelli set last year. Ferrarelli blew away the competition in the 100 backstroke by almost two seconds.
Miclaus won a very close race in the 200 freestyle (1L44.62), edging out Truman State's Robby Cooper (1:44.97). Miclaus' only competition in the 100 butterfly was his teammate, senior Shane Whildin. Miclaus (50.22) was able to hold on for the win while Whildin came in second place in a time of 50.79.
Dane Pedersen was an easy winner in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 9:47.16. Sophomore Tyler Belanger and freshman Justin Zeimetz took first and second places respectively in the 100 freestyle. Freshman Josh Boyd dominated the competition in the 500 freestyle with a winning time of 4:42.31. Fellow frosh Matt North led a Missouri sweep in the 100 breaststroke. North, Stephen Darmitzel and Dan Knudson took the first three places for the Tigers.
Sophomore Sarah Lo was the standout swimmer of the night for the Missouri women. Lo broke the pool record with a time of 56.98 in her victory in the 100 backstroke. She came back later on to win the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:04.76. Swimming the event for just the second time this season, Lo finished just one-tenth of a second off of the MU Natatorium record. Lo led a Missouri one-two-three sweep in the 100 breaststroke. Tiffany Bohon placed second while Mariona Costa came in third.
The Tigers also got a big night out of junior Katy Chandler. Chandler won both the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Sophomore Lizza Igoe won the 1000 freestyle by close to five seconds. Andrea Nigh was also a winner for the Tigers in the 100 freestyle in an impressive time of 52.74.
Freshmen Becca Dawson and Belinda Wood led the Tigers to a first and second place finish in the 100 butterfly. Dawson's time was 57.48 seconds. Wood came in just one second behind Dawson in a time of 58.48.
The Mizzou women also one both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday afternoon in dual meet competition against Southern Illinois. The action begins at 2:00 p.m. at the MU Natatorium. Admission is free.
