Columbia, Mo.-The Missouri women's soccer team wrapped up its 2001 season in grand fashion yesterday with its annual banquet hosted by the MU Kickers' Club. As part of the ceremony, the booster club presented six awards to deserving athletes.
Adriene Davis was honored as the Offensive Player of the Year. The sophomore led Missouri in scoring with 12 goals, 13 assists and 37 points during the 2001 season and highlighted the year topping the nation and Big 12 Conference during the regular season in assists. She set two Mizzou records tying the single-game assist record with three against Arkansas-Little Rock and Missouri's single-season assist mark with 13. She was named to the All-Big 12 Conference second team.
Senior co-captain Dyana Russell added a Defensive Player of the Year honor to a growing list of accolades. The defender was named to the 2001 NSCAA All-Central Region second team, Big 12 All-Tournament team and second team All-Big 12. Russell scored one goal, three assists and five points as a senior.
Midfielder Karen Bauer was presented with the MU Scholar award. A 2001 academic All-Big 12 first team, Bauer scored six goals, five assists and 17 points to rank third in scoring for Mizzou. She also finished the year ranked second on team with three game winning goals. Bauer played in 20 games as a newcomer splitting time at center midfield and forward after sitting out a redshirt freshman season.
Senior co-captain Mandy Waters was presented the Missouri Leadership award for the second season. The defender capped her collegiate career as a 2001 Umbro Select Tournament nominee. The three-time co-captain scored two goals and four assists for eight points as a senior.
Freshman forwards Kristin Heil and Shea Swoboda were both honored as Mizzou's Most Improved athletes.
Heil found her game toward the end of the season scoring her first collegiate goal against Texas Tech. She played in all 21 games a freshman, putting in valuable minutes against Kansas and Texas in the Big 12 Tournament. She scored three goals and three assists for nine points and ranked fifth on the team in scoring.
Swoboda played in 18 games as a freshman scoring three goals for six points, including the game-winning goal against Eastern Illinois in MU's come-from-behind victory. She also led Missouri taking 16-of-20 shots on goal to shoot 80 percent.
Senior Steph Brennan rounded out the awards ceremony as the 2001 Tiger Award recipient. This award represents the student athlete who best represents the work ethic, spirit and team dynamic that embodies the Mizzou program. Brennan was a two-time academic All-Big 12 first team selection. She joined the program as a walk-on freshman that earned a four-year starting position in the Missouri midfield. She rounded out her senior season scoring one goal and delivering five assists for seven points.
