Men's Swimmers Lead Illini Fall Classic

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri men's swimming and diving team lead the Illini Fall Classic after day one of competition in Champaign, Ill. on the campus of the University of Illinois. The Tigers (243 points) hold an eight-point advantage over Southern Illinois (235). Northern Illinois is in third place with 167 points.
The MU women are in third place with 178 points, just five points out of second place. The University of Illinois leads the women's competition with 292 points. Southern Illinois is in second with 183 points. Illinois State is in fourth with 84 points.
Only half of the Missouri women's roster is competing in Champaign this weekend. The other half of the team is in Houston, Texas participating in the Continental Airlines Invitational hosted by Rice University. Results were not available at release time.
The men's team used two events, the 500 freestyle and the 200 individual medley, to take the lead at Illinois. The Tigers took four of the top eight places in the 500 freestyle, Freshman JOSH BOYD finished in second place in a time of 4:38.36. Junior STEPHEN DURLEY was fourth (4:39.81) while freshman BLAKE DAVIS (7th, 4:43.78) and junior DANE PEDERSEN (8th, 4:48.58) rounded out the top eight.
Missouri dominated the 200 IM event, claiming four of the top five places. Juniors MATT FERRARELLI (1:51.91) and RADU MICLAUS (1:53.83) took the top two places while freshman MATT NORTH (1:56.57) and sophomore STEPHEN DARMITZEL (1:58.65) placed fourth and fifth respectively.
Freshman JUSTIN ZEIMETZ was the third-place finisher in the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.62. Right behind Zeimetz was sophomore TYLER BELANGER with a fourth place time of 21.66.
The team of Ferrarelli, North, Miclaus and Belanger closed out the night with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Their winning time was 3:26.93.
The Missouri women got off to a fast start on Friday night. The Tigers won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:38.47. Freshmen LINDSAY PALBYKIN and AMANDA MORFORD teamed with sophomore SHANNON HOLLSTEN and junior ELLEN CROSS.
Cross and Palbykin racked up points for Mizzou in the 50 freestyle. Cross finished second in the event with a time of 24.72. Palbykin finished third in a time of 24.79.
In the 200 individual medley, the Tigers were led by the Morford twins. MEGAN MORFORD finished third in a time of 2:08.99. Here sister Amanda was fourth with a time of 2:10.92. Fellow freshman BELINDA WOOD finished in eighth place with a time of 2:12.21.
The Tigers had two swimmers reach the finals of the 500 freestyle. Senior MOLLY VETTER finished in seventh place while junior SARAH STOWE was eighth. The diving events were still on going at press time.
The Illini Fall Classic continues tomorrow afternoon in Champaign, Ill.
