Lawrence, Kan.-The University of Missouri falls to 11-7 with a 5-5 Big 12 Conference record after a 2-0 loss to Kansas. The Jayhawks boost their season tally to 12-6 and 7-3 in the league.
The Tigers tested the waters during the first few minutes of the match before coming out full force with stylized passing and tight ball control. In defense, the Jayhawks settled into a kick and run playing style gunning the Missouri goal. The regimen proved effective during the first half, as Kansas was able to score on a long cross that was headed in by Brothers.
Missouri's defensive line played an inspirational first period gracefully interchanging and dominating the Jayhawks one-on-one. Midfielder Lacy Moore was a key force igniting the MU defensive effort and regulating the Tigers in the half field. Senior Mandy Waters also pulled through with some valuable play in the MU fullback. Despite the effort, Missouri was unable to capitalize in the first 45 minutes and left the period with a 1-0 deficit.
Mizzou upped the offensive effort during the second half. Senior midfielder Steph Brennan was all over the field bolstering both the Tigers' offensive challenges and defensive counterattacks. Freshman Kristen Heil came in off the bench to jump-start the MU forward line. Although Missouri dominated the second half, the Tigers allowed the Jayhawks to slip another goal past keeper Megan Duncan. Despite a Tiger rally during the last 10 minutes of play, Missouri was unable to overcome the 2-0 deficit.
Missouri rounds out the 2001 regular season with a game against Eastern Illinois. The Tigers host the Panthers on Sun., Nov. 4 at 1:00 p.m., at Audrey J. Walton Soccer Complex. Missouri bids farewell to seniors Steph Brennan, Dyana Russell and Mandy Waters in the final home game of their careers.
