Mizzou Softball Finishes Fall at 12-0

Oct. 21, 2001

Columbia, Mo.- If the fall is any indication of what is to come in the spring for the University of Missouri softball team, a very good season is on the way. The Tigers won two games apiece from UMKC and Indiana State this weekend to finish the fall with a sparkling 12-0 record.

Mizzou wrapped up its fall campaign with two wins on Sunday. Mizzou scored at least one run in every inning but the second en route to clobbering Indiana State in the first game of the day, 13-0. Freshman Erin Kalka won her seventh decision of the fall, pitching a perfect game while striking out five. Kalka finished the fall with a 0.14 ERA, giving up one earned run in 48 2/3 innings of work. She struck out 68 and allowed opponents to hit only .093. Offensively, sophomore Rachael McGinnis led the way by going 3-for-3, scoring three runs and slating four RBI in the game. She also hit her first triple of the fall. McGinnis hit .421 on the fall including three doubles while leading the Tigers in RBI with 16.

In the second game of the day, Mizzou would use a third-inning, three-run double by McGinnis to take a 3-0 lead and the Tiger pitching staff would make it stand limiting the Kangaroos to six hits and two runs in the 4-2 win. Seniors Heather Allister and Lindsey Jacoby recorded two hits each in the contest and Kalka earned her second save. Allister also had an outstanding campaign hitting .629 (22 hits in 35 at bats) with a slugging percentage of .800. She also led the Tigers in on base percentage (.675) and fielding percentage (1.000). Head coach Jay Miller said he has been pleased with how the Tigers have evolved and developed during the fall.

"We were able to try several different lineups and give our younger kids some valuable experience this fall," Miller said. "I am pleased with the way we have matured during the fall and we look forward to the spring."

The next time the Tigers take the field will be on February 8- 10 in San Diego, Calif., to open their 2002 schedule. For more information on Tiger Softball, log on to www.mutigers.com.
