
Swimmers Tie in Black and Gold Meet

COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up the 2001-02 campaign on Friday evening with the annual Black and Gold meet. The two teams were split up evenly by the coaches, and as the results turned out, the matchups could not have been better. The meet ended in a tie, 210-210. The two teams combined to break six meet records.
Sophomore Andrea Nigh, representing the black team, broke two meet records with victories in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Her 50 free time was 24.46. She won the 100 free in a time of 53.13.
Sophomore Sarah Lo also put on a solid performance, winning both the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley. Other winners on the women's side included Katy Chandler in the 500 freestyle, Lizza Igoe in the 200 freestyle, Becca Dawson in the 100 butterfly and Tiffany Bohon in the 100 breaststroke. Both Bohon (1:05.75) and the second place finisher, Mariona Costa (1:05.87) finished under the meet record time.
The Mizzou women also broke a meet record in the 400 freestyle relay. Freshman Lindsay Palbykin joined veterans Chrissy Frieh, Chandler and Nigh for a winning time of 3:34.70.
The men's team was led by Big 12 Champion Matt Ferrarelli and Big 12 finalist Radu Miclaus, both winning two events each. Ferrarelli won the 100 backstroke and set a new meet record in the 200 IM (1:54.42). Miclaus was victorious in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Freshman Josh Boyd won the 500 freestyle, breaking the meet record in a time of 4:43.43. Another freshman, Matt North, was a winner in the 100 breaststroke in a fast time of 58.87. Freshman Justin Zeimetz was the winner in the 50 freestyle and sophomore Tyler Belanger won the 100 freestyle.
In diving, Jamie Sweeney won both diving boards for the men while freshman Anna Massey won the one-meter event for the women and fellow frosh Amanda Maret won the three-meter competition.
