Scouting the Tigers
Missouri is 3-0 on the season recording back-to-back shutouts against North Texas and Indiana State. The Tigers opened the 2001 season with a 3-2 victory over Memphis. Mizzou made history in its inaugural game playing its first home night game to a record setting crowd of 1,926 fans. Missouri downed North Texas 1-0 before rolling over Indiana State in a 4-0 victory.
The Tigers have outshot their opponents 83-13 with a 44-6 shots on goal differential. Missouri also boasts a .530 shots on goal percentage and 2.7 goals per game heading into its fourth game of the season.
An interesting match
Missouri picked up its third win of the season and its second shutout of the year over Indiana State with a 4-0 victory. The Sycamore offense was non-existent in the game, not making one offensive play during the entire 90-minute game. The challenge proved extensive for Missouri as it paired seven offensive players to an ISU defensive force of 11.
Despite the odds, the Tigers dominated the game from the start taking 18 shots during the first half. Mizzou forced ISU goalkeeper, Carey Patton, a member of the 2000 Missouri team, to make six saves in the first 45 minutes, while also giving up two goals. Mizzou didn't let up in the second half as they added 16 more shots to the tally to end the game outshooting Indiana State 34-0. It is the first time Missouri has recorded a game where no shots were taken by its opponents.
Coach Blitz on a team getting no shots
"That is a first for my career. I think coaches have to do what is right for their program. It is not something I agree or disagree with. I understand his point, he was trying to make them slow the game down, he certainly thought in the second half to make it a one half game, which is smart, but it turned out to be a rare surprise by the tactics. It was certainly a good learning experience for us, it was frustrating, but a good experience to learn how to deal with those tactics."
Dynamite Davis
Sophomore Adriene Davis jumped into the 2001 season picking up right where she left off last year. In just three games the forward has already scored five points from one goal and three assists. Davis dished out two assists to help the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over Memphis. On Sunday, she led Missouri's offensive efforts taking 11 shots, including six shots on goal before nailing the game-winner for MU.
Persistence proved key for Davis as she scored the game's only goal on a corner kick by defender Kristin Gibbons. The ball was deflected out of the box by a North Texas defender where Davis was able to collect and score.
Davis picked up her fifth-point of the season in Missouri's 4-0 victory over Indiana State when she flicked a pass through the Sycamore defense allowing freshmen Missy Peabody the game-winning shot.
Getting the proof on Peabody
Freshman Melissa Peabody came out strong for the Tigers scoring back-to-back goals just eight minutes apart to win the MU-Indiana State game. The forward scored Missouri's first, and game-winning goal, ten minutes into the first half when she received a flick from Adriene Davis for the shot.
Peabody paired up with defender Carrie Crosset for her second goal of the game. Crosset sailed a cross into the goal box where Peabody capitalized with a header.
The game boosts Peabody to tie for second on the team with four points. She has taken eight shots this season, including five shots on goal for a .625 shots on goal percentage.
In the Net
Megan Duncan and Stephanie Krawczyk once again prove to be a cunning pair in the Missouri backfield. Each goalkeeper has played valuable minutes for the Tigers in the net this season. Krawczyk opened the season for MU against Memphis. She allowed two goals, made three saves and helped the Tigers to a 3-2 victory. The Anchorage, Alaska, native picked up her first shutout of the season against Indiana State recording a 4-0 victory. She is 2-0 on the year.
Duncan earned her first shutout of the season in Missouri's 1-0 triumph over North Texas. She was only forced to make one save in the game.
Probst on the Prowl
Missouri fans have long known midfielder Suzy Probst to be one of the best defensive players in the Big 12 Conference, but in MU's season opener, the junior showed off her dynamic offensive flavor. Probst scored two of Missouri's three goals against Memphis to lead the Tigers to a 3-2 victory.
The midfielder scored the first goal of the game 20 minutes into the first period. Freshman Kristen Heil sailed a cross inside to forward Adriene Davis who was unable to take a solid shot. Davis made a tight ground pass to Probst in the box for the score. For her second play, Probst picked up a ball that ricocheted off a Memphis defender for an unassisted point.
Probst leads the team with two goals and four points on the season. She has taken six total shots.
Earning their Stripes
Midfielder Karen Bauer, a medical redshirt freshman last season, scored her first collegiate goal against Indiana State. Bauer scored the Tigers' third goal in the game on a free kick that was crossed in by defender Kristin Gibbons. The 5-9 Bauer found the ball in the air and scored on a header in the top left corner of the ISU net.
Also scoring her first career goal was MU's first international player Tamara Kochen. The Beer Tuvyia, Israel, native scored her collegiate goal unassisted. She collected a ball that was deflected from an Indiana State defender for a quick shot and score. So far this season, Kochen has played in all three games and has taken two shots on goal.
Defense is the Key
Senior Dyana Russell proves once again why she deserves to be ranked amongst the top defenders in the country. Russell anchors the Missouri backfield that thus far has decimated the offensive opposition. In three games, she has helped the squad keep their opponents to just 13 shot attempts to average just 4.3 shots per game. Russell single handedly shut down North Texas' Marilyn Marin, the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and the Eagles leading scorer. Playing 77 minutes against Russell, Marin was only able to rip off two shots, neither of which were on goal.
Valuable Contributions
Adding to the solid defensive effort, freshman Kim Hibbert and junior walk-on Carrie Crosset have proven themselves as valuable assets to the Missouri defensive line. Both players have started all three games for the Tigers, playing over 80 minutes each game. Hibbert and Crosset add volumes of speed to the Tiger defensive game as well as impressive control and vision.
Scouting Iowa
The Hawkeyes are 1-1 heading into Friday's game. Iowa defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee 1-0 in its season opener before falling 2-1 to Marquette on Sept. 2.
Iowa rounded out the 2000 season with an 11-9 record under first-year Head Coach Wendy Logan. The Hawkeyes went 5-5 in the Big Ten Conference to tie for sixth in the leagues final standings. Iowa returns 14 letterwinners and nine starters to the 2001 squad including junior forward Sarah Lynch who was named first team All-Big 10 last year and as an NSCAA All-Central Region third team selection. Lynch leads the Hawkeyes with four points on the season. She scored the game-winner against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Iowa's only goal against Marquette.
Goalkeeper Liz Hendel controls the box for the Hawkeyes. She is 1-1 on the season making nine saves and allowing two goals. She started all 20 games as a sophomore last season recording 3.5 shutouts and 146 saves, while allowing just 36 goals.
