Team USA wins U.S. Cup Gold Medal Under Tutelage of Miller

June 25, 2001

Honolulu, Hawaii-- Missouri head softball coach Jay Miller continues to show why he is one of the nation's elite softball coaches. The latest example came Sunday as pitcher Catherine Osterman (Houston, TX) had another dominant performance inside the pitching circle as the USA Softball team, who is coached by Miller, defeated China 4-0 to win the 2001 U.S. Cup. Team USA concludes the tournament as the only unbeaten team at 4-0. China finishes at 2-2.

USA Red has been in Honolulu since June 20 to represent the USA. They defeated 2000 Olympic silver medalist Japan last Thursday, 1-0 and then took out bronze medalist Australia on Saturday, 4-0. Sunday night's championship game marked the second time the team had defeated China, the other win coming on Friday, 4-1. The U.S. Cup marked the first time Team USA had faced these international teams since the 2000 Olympic Games.

Both the Red and Blue teams will now travel to Vancouver, B.C., June 30-July 6, for the 2001 Canada Cup. The USA captured the gold and the bronze medals in 1999 when two teams were represented at the Canada Cup.

In 1998, Miller was selected as the head coach of the USA Softball alternate team. This team played against the U.S. Pan Am and Olympic Teams during the Coca-Cola USA Softball American Challenge Series during the summer of 1999. The team represented the USA in the 1999 Canada Cup where the team won the bronze medal. He served on the NCAA Women's Softball Committee from 1991-1997 and was a member of the USA Softball National Team Selection Committee that chose players and coaches for the 1996 Gold Medal winning U.S. Olympic Softball Team (1993-1996). He is currently on the NCAA Rules Committee and the NFCA All-American Committee.

Miller led the Tigers to 31-28 record earlier this year and has posted an impressive 680-382 (.640) during the course of his 19 year head coaching career.
