Missouri Men Still Lead After Day Three Of Big 12 Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Missouri men's track and field team remains in the driver's seat after day three of the Big 12 Conference Championships here Friday.

Senior Jay Meystedt was the big scorer for the Tigers, winning the with a 7-0.50 effort. He was a little under a foot off the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7-1.75, but he posted a provisional qualifying mark earlier in the season. Meystedt joins Knut Harald Sommerfeldt (decathlon) and Mike Pitts (10,000m) as 2001 Big 12 Champions for MU.

Sophomores Russ Bell and Christian Cantwell also posted scoring marks for the Tigers in the discus. Bell ripped a career-high and NCAA provisional mark of 192-8 for fourth place. Cantwell came in fifth with 186-7, which gave Mizzou four more team points for the meet.

The Missouri women currently sit in seventh place and received big performances from senior Ashley Wysong and Ann Marie Brooks. Wysong finished second in her heat of the 800-meter run (2:13.59) and Brooks turned in a second-place performance in her heat of the 1500m (4:27.96). Both women will run in tomorrow's finals. The first event on Saturday is the final of the men's javelin at 11:00 a.m.
