Columbia, Mo. - The Missouri softball team won one game Sunday and was leading another when play was suspended due to darkness. Missouri defeated Iowa State 6-5, and was leading Indiana State 5-1 when play was suspended. The Sycamores from Indiana State will return to Columbia on March 19 to complete the game and play another against the Tigers.
In their first game Sunday, the Tigers faced Iowa State, who beat them in a 6-4 heartbreaker on Friday. The Tigers scored first in the top of the second inning, bringing in two runs off hits by pitcher Ingrid Werner and catcher Mary McGrane. Two Cyclone runs scored in the bottom of the second and three more would score in the bottom of the third.
In the sixth, down 5-2, Missouri started a rally that would decide the game. With the bases loaded, junior Lindsey Jacoby hit a single to the shortstop to drive in freshman Rachael McGinnis. Then, pitcher Stephanie Falk hit a single that bounced around in left center field, allowing two more runs to score and tie the game. Finally, with two out and the bases loaded, centerfielder Karen Williams hit a single to the pitcher that would score Lindsey Jacoby, and the Tigers took the 6-5 lead, which they would carry through the sixth and seventh innings to win the game.
Werner pitched two and one-third innings before being relieved by Falk, who pitched the rest of the game, allowing no hits and only one walk to earn the win.
Williams had a very good weekend, hitting 11-16 (.688). She was also 6-6 in stolen bases and had three putouts with a perfect fielding percentage in center field.
The Tigers will stay at home next weekend as well, hosting Temple, Pittsburgh and Indiana in the the Missouri Invitational. Mizzou's first game is against Temple at noon on Friday, March 16.
