Columbia, Mo.-The University of Missouri women's soccer team announces the signing of seven athletes to the 2001 roster. The Tigers welcome Angela Furin, Ashley Gibbs, Kim Hibbert, Kristen Heil, Lacy Moore, Missy Peabody and Shea Swoboda to the MU squad.
Furin is a defender/midfielder from Kingwood, Texas. She led Kingwood High School to a Texas state championship and a No. 1 national ranking. Furin was named to the Texas all-district team and was a first team All-Greater Houston team pick. She played for the Houston Challenge soccer club where she helped the team to the 1999 Region III Championship podium. Houston Challenge was also a Final Four contender in the national championship. Furin served as the president for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for three years. She was also a varsity lacrosse player at Kingwood.
Gibbs comes to Mizzou from Westminster, Colo., where she was a four-year varsity starter at Centaraus High School. She was the second leading scorer in the state as a freshman and was named to the all-conference team. Gibbs was a member of the Colorado Storm soccer club. She was also an all-state track athlete. Gibbs looks to contribute on the Missouri defensive line next season.
Hibbert looks to make an impact in MU's offensive game as a freshman. The Urbandale, Iowa, native was named all-state and all-tournament teams while playing for Urbandale High School. She was honored as the team's Most Valuable Player. Hibbert played club soccer for the Iowa United and was also an all-state track athlete.
Heil is a forward from Algonquin, Ill. She helped Jacobs High School travel the state tournament for the first time in school history. Heil was named to the 2000 all-sectional team while at Jacobs and was named the Daily Herald Player of the Year. She played her club ball with the Chicago Shockers and led the team to the 1999 club state championship. Heil was a member of the high school student council.
Moore joins the Tigers looking to make an impact at midfield. A native of Englewood, Colo., she was a four-year starter for Cherry Creek High School and was a two-time all-state honorable mention. Moore played for the Colorado Rush and has played on teams winning six state championships. She was also a first team all-league basketball player at Cherry Creek.
Peabody is a midfielder/forward from St. Louis, Mo. She was a three-year varsity starter at Ursuline Academy. She led Ursuline in scoring from 1998-2000 and was a three-time first team all-state selection. Peabody played club soccer with the JB Marine soccer club. She led the team to the 2000 U-18 Missouri state championship and U-20 regional club championship.
Swoboda, a native of Liberty, Mo., joins the Mizzou forward lines. She holds the record for most goals scored in a season and career at Winnetonka High School. Swoboda was named Winnetonka's Most Valuable Player three years running. She was also a three-time all-conference selection and was named all-district and to the All-Northland teams twice. Swoboda played club ball for the Liberty Patriots United team. She was named valedictorian and student body class president this year at Winnetonka.
