Columbia, Mo. - University of Missouri Head Men's Basketball Coach Quin Snyder filled out his staff today as he announced the hiring of Lane Odom as an assistant coach. Odom will join Missouri from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
Odom, 33, has been an assistant with the 49ers for the previous two years, and has helped lead the program to back-to-back postseason bids. In 1998-99, the 49ers captured the Conference USA Tournament Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In 1999-2000, the 49ers reached the NIT. In Odom's two seasons there, the 49ers posted a 40-27 record.
"I've known Lane for quite awhile, and I'm very excited to have someone of his caliber joining our program," said Snyder. "His work ethic and his basketball knowledge are exemplary, and he's got a dynamic personality that should make him a great fit at Missouri. Our kids are going to enjoy working with him, and I'm pleased to have the same opportunity," he said.
"I'm grateful to Missouri for this opportunity," said Odom. "I'm looking forward to coaching what is an outstanding group of young men at Missouri. They have an exciting program that is on the rise, and I'm fortunate to have the chance to work under one of the best young coaches in the country in Quin Snyder," he said.
The 49ers recruiting class for the upcoming 2000-01 season has been ranked in the top-20 by various recruiting publications. Prior to joining the 49ers staff, Odom was an assistant at East Carolina from 1995-98, where he helped assemble a top-20 recruiting class in his final year. He also has served as an assistant coach under Wimp Sanderson at Alabama (1991-95) after spending one season (1990-91) as a graduate assistant there.
Odom, the son of Wake Forest Head Coach Dave Odom, is a 1989 graduate of High Point University, where he was a member of the Panthers' basketball team.
Tony Harvey Promoted to Associate Head Coach
In other news concerning men's basketball, Quin Snyder announced today that assistant coach Tony Harvey has been promoted to associate head coach for the program. Harvey, 33, is in his second year at Missouri, and has been instrumental in establishing Mizzou as one of the nation's up-and-coming programs. As Snyder's second in command, Harvey will take on an increased leadership role with the team and the Tiger coaching staff.
"I'm really excited about this opportunity," said Harvey. "We feel like we're doing some great things here at Missouri, and I look forward to tackling the added responsibilities of my new role," he said.
"I expect great things from Coach Harvey in his new capacity as associate head coach," said Snyder. "In demonstrating solid leadership capabilities as an assistant coach, he has more than earned his new assignment," he said.
Harvey steps into the associate head coaching position following the departure of John Hammond, who will join the Los Angeles Clippers of the NBA. Hammond will join former Tiger Keyon Dooling, who was selected by the Clippers as the 10th pick of the 2000 NBA Draft.
"I've really enjoyed my time at Mizzou," said Hammond. "Working with the players here as well as Coach Snyder has been a tremendous experience for me. I'll always look fondly upon my time here, and I look forward to following the continuing rise of Mizzou Basketball," he said.
"We're very happy for John," said Snyder. "He has been a valuable resource to the program and to myself. It is exciting to know that he'll be reunited with Keyon in the pro ranks, and we'll enjoy following their progress," he said.
