COLUMBIA, MO -- The Kansas State Wildcats piled up seven runs in the first two innings Sunday and held off the Missouri Tigers, 9-6, in Big 12 Conference baseball action at Taylor Stadium at Simmons Field.
The win enabled Kansas State (17-26, 4-19) to snap a 19-game road losing streak and prevented Missouri from posting its first conference series sweep of the season. The 'Cats also stopped the Tigers' four-game winning streak and prevented them from logging their sixth consecutive 30-win season.
Kansas State leadoff hitter Graham McAllister led the Wildcats with a 4-for-5 performance and started the game with a single to right field off of Mizzou freshman Drew Endicott, who was making his first conference start. KSU went on to score two runs in the first inning, and after the Tigers plated four runs in their first inning, the Wildcats went to work again in the second.
They knocked Endicott from the game with five hits and five runs, the big blow a three-run home run to left field by Mark English. It was his team-leading eighth home run of the season.
Missouri got home runs from Ryan Stegall in the second inning and Landon Brandes in the third, but managed just three hits the rest of the way.
Endicott was the losing pitcher (1-3), while Kansas State's Jason Wells (4-6) earned the victory. Wells pitched five-and-a-third innings and allowed all six Missouri runs. Freshman Derek Ver Helst came on in the sixth inning and allowed just two hits the rest of the way to record his second save.
Missouri (19-18, 10-11) is off this week while the Tigers take final examinations and returns to Big 12 play next weekend, playing the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman on May 6-7-8.
