COLUMBIA, MO -- The Nebraska Cornhuskers scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie the game, 5-5, then scored six runs in the sixth to send them on their way to a sixth consecutive victory, 15-8 over the Missouri Tigers Saturday night at Taylor Stadium at Simmons Field.
Missouri led 5-3 after Jayce Tingler and J.R. Warner singled home runs in the fourth inning.
But Nebraska (25-11, 12-8) tied it against Tigers starter Pete Sansone in the fifth inning. The first run scored on a wild pitch and Justin Cowan's sacrifice fly tied the game. In the sixth, Nebraska sent 12 men to the plate, and scored four runs against reliever Ralph McCasland before Mitch Kiler came on and struck out Adam Stern for the inning's first out. Two walks and a hit plated two more runs.
For the second straight night Nebraska, the Big 12's top hitting team, rolled up 18 hits. Leadoff man Jamal Strong went 4-for-4 and scored three runs, while Cowan had five runs batted in, including a three-run home run in the ninth inning. Dan Johnson hit his 10th homer of the season for the Cornhuskers leading off the fourth inning.
Nebraska's third pitcher, R.D. Spiehs, pitched four-and-two-thirds innings to earn the victory (3-1). McCasland worked just one-third of an inning for Missouri and absorbed the loss (6-4).
Missouri (22-15, 8-9) got a late home run from Jon Williams. The Tigers' Ryan Stegall, the Big 12's leading hitter, went three-for-five and drove in two runs. His 19th double of the season, which also leads the league, drove in a run for MU in the ninth inning. Stegall's batting average climbed to .423 overall and .479 in conference play.
The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. Jon Harris (3-3) is the scheduled starter for the Tigers who are 6-0 on Sundays this season. Nebraska has yet to name a starting pitcher.
