Des Moines, Iowa - Jessica Ferguson, of the University of Missouri women's tennis team, won the A Flight singles title at this past weekend's Lloyd Stokstad Invitational. The tournament, which was held Friday through Sunday at the Drake Tennis Center, was a successful one for MU as several Tigers finished among the top three.
Ferguson, a freshman from Houston, Texas, defeated teammate Kristina Olshanskaya (So., Los Angeles) in Sunday's final 6-2, 3-0 (retired). Ferguson won two matches Friday and two matches Saturday before Sunday's final. Both of Ferguson's wins on Saturday came via tiebreakers.
Cassie Drake (Fr., Kansas City) finished in third place in the B Singles. In C Singles, Andrea Friedman (Sr., Omaha, Neb.) was the runner-up.
In doubles action, Ferguson and Caitlin Thompson (Jr., Roswell, Ga.) finished in seventh place in A Doubles while Emily Goldman (Fr., Miami, Fla.) teamed with Friedman to finish third in B Doubles.
Missouri will send four student-athletes to the ITA Central Region Rolex Tournament. The indoor tournament runs Tuesday through Sunday. Representing Missouri will be Drake, Ferguson, Olshanskaya and Thompson. Olshanskaya, Ferguson and Drake will play both singles and doubles while Thompson will join Ferguson on a doubles team.
"I was very happy two of our freshmen got in," said MU head coach Blake Starkey. "This meet is the best of the best and there are no easy matches. It's a great opportunity and a wonderful challenge for us."
