COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior Jon Williams went 4-for-4 and scored four runs to lead the White team Tigers to a 13-7 victory over the Black team Bengals in the University of Missouri baseball Fall World Series Friday evening. The Tigers won the best-of-five series three games to one.
Also putting up big numbers at the plate for the White team were freshmen Lee Laskowski, who went 4-for-5 with one run batted in and two runs scored and Shannon Wheeler, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Junior first baseman Mick Weiss hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning. It was the first home run of the series for both teams.
The White team scored four runs in the second inning and five runs in the sixth to take a 9-3 advantage over the Black team. The Black scored three runs in the seventh to cut the lead to four at 10-6. The Tigers added three runs in the top of the ninth to put the game away for good.
For the Black team, junior W.T. Hoover provided most of its scoring punch. Hoover went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, including a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh. Hoover and freshman Bo Davis were the only multi-hit batters on the Bengals' team.
"The White team was the better team," said Head Coach Tim Jamieson. "Offensively both teams had great at-bats throughout the series and the guys that will start for us in the ended the fall on a positive note."
The Tigers start the 2001 season on the road at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Feb. 9.
