The Missouri Tigers will kickoff the 2000-01 campaign this Saturday morning at the MU Natatorium at 11:00 a.m. The Missouri women, coming off of the most successful season in school history with a 9-2 dual meet record, host the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks. The Mizzou men, who finished 6-2 last year in dual competition, will face Missouri-Rolla.
Both Missouri squads were in action last Friday night and Saturday morning. The Tigers held their annual Black and Gold Meet on Friday evening and participated in an Alumni Meet on Saturday morning.
Arkansas competed in the Southeast Conference West exhibition meet last week and placed third overall. The Missouri-Rolla men's squad owns a 0-0-1 record after tying Evansville on Friday night. The final score was 47.5-47.5.
TIGERS GET OFF TO FAST START IN BLACK AND GOLD MEET
Head Coach BRIAN HOFFER was pleased following the annual Black and Gold exhibition meet on Friday night at the MU Natatorium. Nine meet records were broken, seven of them by the men.
Sophomore MATT FERRARELLI won both the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley, crushing meet records in both events. He recorded a 4:43.73 in the 500 free and a 1:54.96 in the 200 IM.
Lo and Cervenka broke their own meet records in the 50 free and 200 free respectively while sophomore RADU MICLAUS and junior SHANE WHILDIN were both under the meet record in the 100 butterfly.
On the women's side, three Tigers were double-winners on Friday evening. Senior JEANNA WILLI broke her own meet record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.50. She also won the 100 butterfly. Sophomore KATY CHANDLER won the 500 freestyle, and came back less than 10 minutes later to win the 200 free.
Freshman SARAH LO showed why she will make an immediate impact to the Tiger lineup this season. The younger sister of men's captain Aaron Lo, won the 100 backstroke in a time of 58.57 and also won the 200 individual medley (2:09.70).
HOFFER HAS HIS PROGRAM HITTING 100
The number 100 has become a milestone number for Hoffer's program. Last season, the Mizzou men and women eclipsed the 100-plateau in school records broken in Hoffer's eight seasons. The men and women are just a combined six dual wins away from giving Hoffer 100 victories for his career. His overall record stands at 94-79 (54-36 women, 40-43 men).
The Tigers have also achieved in the classroom under Hoffer. Missouri has had 132 athletes selected to the Academic All-Conference teams over the last eight seasons.
