Camp Larry Report, Tuesday, Aug. 15, Morning Practice

Aug. 15, 2000

MEXICO, Mo.- Overcast skies turned into hot sunshine on Tuesday morning in Mexico, Mo. for day two of Camp Larry at Missouri Military Academy. The Missouri Tigers spent most of the morning working on short yardage situations.

Junior linebacker David Monroe highlighted the morning practice with two straight collisions with running back Zack Abron in seven-on-seven running drills. On the first play, Monroe met Abron at the line-of-scrimmage and popped the redshirt freshman right to the ground for no gain. On the very next play, Abron got his yardage, but lost the war to Monroe. Abron picked up three yards on the carry only to receive a second crushing blow from Monroe. The hit knocked the wind of Abron for a couple of minutes.

The Tigers spent the last two periods of practice in a short yardage scrimmage. After taken a beating by the defense in seven-on-seven drills, the offensive line fought back in the scrimmage by opening up several holes for running backs Abron and Zain Gilmore.

OUTLAW MAKING PROGRESS: Coach Larry Smith told the media following practice that he is happy with the progression of redshirt freshman quarterback Darius Outlaw. Smith said Outlaw has become more comfortable and he is making plays. Smith expects a real battle between Outlaw and junior Jim Dougherty for the second team QB job.

NEW FACE IN CAMP: Walk-on freshman kicker Justin Scott has drawn the attention of Coach Smith. Scott came to two-a-day freshman camp last week and impressed Smith with his leg. A left-footer from St. Louis University High School, Scott will continue to work with Special Teams Coach Corby Smith and very well could be the Tigers' second-string kicker behind Brad Hammerich.
