Dave Toub, who served in an interim capacity during the 1998 football season as coach of the University of Missouri's defensive guards and nose tackles, will remain in that capacity on a permanent basis, Head Coach Larry Smith said today.
"Dave did an excellent job this season," Smith said. "As our strength coach previously, he had an excellent rapport with the players and a thorough knowledge of our program. Those qualities made him an obvious choice when we had to realign the staff last summer following the tragic death of Curtis Jones.
"He worked hard in his new role and I'm pleased to keep him on to coach our defensive line. His return will maintain the continuity on our coaching staff that has been so important to the development of the MU football program over the last five years.
The play of Missouri's defensive line was an important factor in the Tigers' defensive improvement in 1998. Two of Toub's players received post-season honors. Senior guard Justin Wyatt was a first-team all-Big 12 selection, while junior nose tackle Jeff Marriott was a third-team choice and the defensive player of the game in Mizzou's Insight.com Bowl victory over West Virginia.
"It's truly an honor to be a part of Larry Smith's staff," Toub said.
Toub, 36, was the head strength and conditioning coach for the Tigers from 1989-98, and last year was named the Big 12 Conference "Strength Coach of the Year." He was a small college all-America lineman at Springfield College, then transferred and completed his career at UTEP. He was a two-year starter for the Miners and was drafted in the ninth round of the NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1985. He also spent time as a free-agent with the Los Angeles Rams in 1986.
He began coaching as a graduate assistant at UTEP in 1986, working with the offensive line and serving as interim strength coach. He became the full time strength coach in 1987 and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. A native of Mahopac, N.Y., Toub holds a bachelor's degree in education from Texas-El Paso (1986) and earned a master's degree there in health and physical education in 1988.
