The Missouri women's basketball team tipped off a new season in fashion with an overtime victory. The Tigerrs fought back from dismal shooting in the first half to defeat the Basketball Travelers 83-78.
The Tigers shot just 29.4 percent from the field in the first half. The Tigers improved to 56.5 percent in the second half. Junior All-American canidate Julie Helm sparked the Tigers by pouring in 21 points in the second half. Senior Kesha Bonds added a double-double with 25 points and 13 boards.
"We were a little nervous with a new system," said Helm. "Once we calm it will look a little prettier. We showed a lot of heart and that was the difference in the game."
The Tigers will try to improve as they face Latvia on Tuesday night.
"From here we keep advancing, we need to build on what we have right now," coach Cindy Stein said. "We still have a lot of elements to put in, so I am proud of this team."
