COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri Tigers (27-12-0) capitalized on five Kansas errors and a fourth inning three-run homerun off the bat of Erin Erickson to beat the Jayhwaks (14-20), 5-0.
Missouri began the scoring in the first when Linda Swarts drove home Stacy Gemeinhardt with a two-out single. Gemeinhardt had reached on the first of three errors by Jayhawk shortstop Christy McPhail and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Jayhawk starter Workman (8-10). Workman and McPhail teamed to give the Tigers another run in the third when Gemeinhardt singled to short and hustled to second on a bobble by McPhail. Gemeinhardt then scored two batters later on the second wild pitch by Workman.
Jayhawk errors again proved costly in the fourth. The third error by McPhail, this time on a grounder by Tiger right fielder, Christy Skouby, opened the floodgates. After catcher Amy Farmer walked, Erin Erickson chased Workman with a three-run homerun that hit the scoreboard, the first homerun by the Tigers in their new facility. Workman's line: 3 innings, 5 runs, 2 earned.
While Workman struggled, Tiger pitcher Stephanie Falk cruised. She was threatened only once in the fifth when the Jayhawks put runners on second and third with two outs. Falk worked out of the jam, inducing Shelley Musser into a harmless fly to center. Falk didn't allow more than one base runner in any of the other innings, while retiring the last seven Jayhawks.
The Tigers, now winners of three in a row, will take on intrastate rival, UMKC, in a double-header on Wednesday beginning at 3 p.m.
