
Missouri Baseball Wins Two at Nebraska

COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Missouri Tigers (28-15, 10-11) have now won 14 of their 16 games after coming with two wins at Nebraska this past weekend. After falling 8-7 in 11 innnings on Friday night, the Tigers defeated the 21st ranked Cornhuskers 7-1 on Saturday and 9-7 on Sunday. The Tigers are in seventh place in the Big 12 Conference with two conference series to go against 11th place Iowa State and ninth place Kansas State.
Defensive miscues killed the Tigers in Friday night's 11 inning loss to the Huskers. Missouri committed five errors on the night. Despite scoring seven runs on 12 hits, the Tigers left a season-high 17 baserunners on base. Jon Williams led the Missouri offensive attack with a 4-for-7 night. Starting pitcher Justin Stine deserved better as he gave up seven runs in nine innings. Only two of those runs were earned. Ralph McCasland (2-3) was the losing pitcher for Missouri.
On Saturday afternoon, Missouri starting pitcher Chris George (3-2) dominated Nebraska, the fourth best scoring team in the country. George went the distance giving up just one run on five hits while striking out a career-high 10. The 7-1 loss was just the second home defeat of the season for Nebraska. Jon Williams again had a big day at the plate for Missouri with a 4-for-5 day which included two doubles and two RBI. Ryan Stegall connected for his 11th home run of the season.
On Sunday, sophomore Logan Dale (6-2) pitched in place of Tigers ace Jody Harris (sore elbow) and gave up just three earned runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. Missouri trailed Nebraska and pitcher Scott Fries 2-1 until the eighth inning when the Tigers exploded for five runs. With the game tied at 2-2, J.R. Warner (2-for-5, 4 RBI) doubled off of Fries to drive in the go-ahead run. Later in the inning, Aaron Wilson drove in two runs with a double to put the Tigers up 6-2.
Nebraska would not go away as they tallied three runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 6-5. The Tigers added three insurance runs in the in the ninth inning when Warner came to the plate again with two runners on base. Warner smashed a three-run home run against the wind to right field off Huskers reliever Brandon Penas go put Mizzou back on top 9-5. Ryan Jamison gave up two runs in the ninth inning but held off the late Nebraska rally to record his fifth save of the season.
