Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri men's basketball schedule has been finalized for the upcoming 1998-99 season, as announced by the MU athletic department.
Head Coach NORM STEWART and his 32nd Tiger squad will look to improve on a 17-15 record last season, and will face a minimum of eight teams that reached post-season play last year. Highlighting the non-conference slate are Missouri's second appearance in the Chase NIT, as well as road games at SMU (Dec. 12) and Iowa (Dec. 19), and the annual Busch Braggin' Rights game with Illinois (Dec. 22).
Once again, Missouri fans will have plenty of opportunities to see MU play via the airwaves, as the Tigers are scheduled to make five national appearances, six regional cable appearances, and seven statewide appearances on the Mizzou Sports Network. Highlighting MU's national appearances are ESPN Big Monday games vs. Kansas (Jan. 11 in Columbia) and at Iowa State (Feb. 8), two CBS contests at Kansas (Jan. 24) and at Texas (Feb. 27), as well as a Feb. 15 battle against Oklahoma on ESPN2, in Columbia.
Missouri gets the regular-season underway on Fri., Nov. 13th with Jackson State. The Tigers then host in-state foe Southwest Missouri State in the first round of the Chase NIT, on Wed., Nov. 18th at 7:00 p.m. The winner of that contest will face the winner of 1998 Final Four participant Stanford and Southern Methodist on Nov. 20 at a campus site to be determined. The winner of the second-round matchup will move to New York, N.Y., where the semi-finals and finals are scheduled for Madison Square Garden on Nov. 25 and Nov. 27, respectively. The last time MU played in the pre-season NIT was in 1988. The Tigers hosted Southwest Missouri State in the first round that year, as well, and defeated the Bears, and later downed Xavier and North Carolina, on their way to the tournament finals, where they fell to Syracuse in overtime (86-84).
Other non-conference home contests include Austin Peay, Southwest Texas, Nicholls State (a 1998 NCAA Tournament qualifier), Idaho, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Centenary College. The Tigers will play back-to-back road games at SMU (Dec. 12) and Iowa (Dec. 19) prior to the annual St. Louis border battle with Illinois (Dec. 22). In the Big 12 scheduling matrix, Missouri will face South Division opponents Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas Tech at home, and will travel to Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas A&M, in addition to home-and-away dates with North brethren Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State and Nebraska.
The season officially gets underway latenight on Oct. 16th, when the Tigers hit the court for the first time, in the second-annual Midnight Madness. Festivities tip off at 11:00 p.m. at the Hearnes Center, and MU will begin practice at 12:00 a.m. Oct. 17th, the first day of practice. Two weeks later, the long-standing tradition of the Hearnes Haunted House of Hoops returns at 7:30 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 31st. Missouri will play two exhibition contests in November, as the Tigers play host to the California All-Stars on Mon., Nov. 2nd, and the Philippine National Team on Mon., Nov. 9th.

*Missouri and SMU could meet twice this season, if both teams win their respective first-round Chase NIT games. MU hosts Southwest Missouri, and SMU plays at Stanford, both on Nov. 18th.
