Missouri Baseball Announces Early Signees

Nov. 29, 1999

COLUMBIA, Mo.- Missouri baseball coach Tim Jamieson announced Monday that seven high school athletes have signed national letters-of-intent to play at the University of Missouri. Jamieson inked five pitchers and two positional players. Four of the signees are Missouri natives.

Of the five pitchers signed, three are from the state of Missouri. The first pitcher is Sean Marcum, a right-hander from Excelsior Springs, Mo. Marcum posted a 0.71 ERA for the state runner-up in Class 3A. He recorded 86 strikeouts and just 8 walks. This past summer Marcum, hurled 61 1/3 innings in legion ball and recorded an ERA of 2.28. He collected 44 strikeouts while walking 18.

Marcum is also capable of playing the infield. Offensively, he hit .521 for Excelsior Springs with nine home runs.

Joining Marcum will be Garrett Bauer, a talented left-hander from Lafayette High School in St. Louis. Bauer went 4-2 last year with a 3.83 ERA while striking out 48 and walking 19. He put together an 11-2 record this past summer in American Legion play. Bauer becomes the latest of several Lafayette grads to play for MU including the likes of Aaron Jaworowski, Brian Barnes and Nick Schwieder.

The third Missouri hurler to sign with the Tigers is right-hander Garrett Broshuis of Advance, Mo. Broshuis notched 107 strikeouts in just over 57 innings of work last year. He allowed just 19 earned runs and 37 hits.

Along with the three pitchers, the Tigers also signed catcher out of Clayton High School in St. Louis. Laskowski is a three-year starter who has never hit below .447 in his career. He has seven career home runs and 73 RBI for Clayton High. Laskowski was a third team All-Metro pick last year.

The Tigers also did well out of state by signing two players from the state of Oklahoma and one from New Mexico. Cody Ehlers of Stillwater, Okla. is a very talented left-handed pitcher who can also play first base. In legion ball, Ehlers hit .466 (70-for-150) with 17 HR and 81 RBI. He also had 22 doubles. Ehlers led his Stillwater team to the 1998 American Legion national championship in Denver, Colo.

Missouri also signed right-hand pitcher Charlie Page of Albuquerque, N.M. and Bo Davis of Tulsa, Okla. Page is considered one of the top pitchers coming out of the state of New Mexico. Davis hit .374 and was an All-Metro selection for Jenks High School.

Tim Jamieson felt the need for pitching was of up most importance in this recruiting class. Jamieson feels like the Tigers accomplished that need.

"Our need was pitching and we felt like we had to get pitchers that can pitch for us next year," said Jamieson. "We got three of the top pitching prospects in the state of Missouri and the top pitching prospect in the state of New Mexico. Ehlers is a sleeper out of Oklahoma."

Jamieson feels that his pitching recruits are talented enough to warrant being drafted in the Major League Amateur Draft in June, but he is not going to worry about that now.

"We recognize that some of these players could be drafted, but we'll worry about that come June," said Jamieson.
