COLUMBIA, MO., Nov. 22 __The University of Missouri's men's and women's cross country teams concluded their respective seasons on Monday afternoon at the NCAA Championships in Bloomington, Ind. The women, who placed second at in their region last week, finished in 23rd place. The Tigers finished with a score of 480 points. The men, also coming off a second place regional finish, placed 28th with a score of 556.
It was a disappointing finish for the young Tiger runners, but coach Jeff Pigg was still happy with the way the season went.
"We had another good year," said Pigg. "If we hit perfect, we are going to be a top 15 team. We have nothing to be ashamed of, but we still have an empty feeling."
Disappointed with their finish, the Tiger men can were led by senior Adam MacDowell. He was Missouri's top finisher with an 83rd place finish in a time of 31 minutes, 55.00 seconds. Junior Nick Smith placed 99th with a time of 32 minutes, 4 seconds. Sophomore Steve Wade (154th, 32:46.80), senior Derrick Peterson (32:52.90) and junior Greg Spiecher (195th, 33.24.50) were Missouri's other top five finishers.
"I'm not satisfied now and neither are the guys," said Pigg. "We're headed to the next level and this is the first step."
Arkansas claimed the men's title with 58 points. Wisconsin finished second with 185 points while North Carolina State was the third place team with 201 total points.
