COLUMBIA, Mo. - If every women's soccer game was a barometer of improvement today's game tops the list. Ranked No. 23 by the Soccer America, Baylor was out shot today by Missouri. Last year, the Tigers were shut out by the Bears 0-5. This year, Missouri shut down Courtney Saunders, Baylor's star forward. Second in the Big 12 in scoring, Saunders didn't get a single shot off in the game. The defense only gave up six shots total.
Baylor got their lone goal in the 15th minute of the first half when midfielder Julie Goin found forward Molly Cameron and she put one into the lower left corner. However, after the Bears scored they only took two more shots, and only one shot in the second half.
Missouri had several chances to even out the score, but they just couldn't close the deal. Forwards Erin Grimsley and Nikki Thole came close tying the game in the first half off some combination passes, but Grimsley's shot went wide. Then in the seocnd half, Missouri came out strong, and pressured the Baylor defense. However, after a couple, of key missed chances, the defense made sure they kept the Tigers in the game.
"I thought we were very solid today. It was the best communication we've had so far," stated defender Dyana Russell.
Missouri goes on the road next week with more Big 12 action in Oklahoma. They take on the Sooners on Friday, and then go to Stillwater to go head to head with Oklahoma State.
