Columbia, Mo. - Three Missouri Track and Field team members have been named to the District VII GTE Academic All-America Spring At-Large Teams as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Senior Jeff Strong (Pawnee City, Mo.) and junior Lindsey Miller (Lake Lotawana, Mo.) were chosen for the men's and women's first teams, while sophomore Ashley Wysong (Nevada, Mo.) made the women's second team.
Strong, a human nutrition and foods major, carries a 3.66 GPA and plans pursue a Masters in Business Administration upon completion of his bachelors degree. He is a four-time Academic all-Big 12 selection, a member of the Mortar Board, Golden Key Club, and in 1997 and 1998, recorded the highest GPA of any male member of the track and field team. Strong is a two-time all-Big 12 pick on the track in 1,000m run during the 1998 and 1999 indoor seasons. He also was a member of the Missouri men's Distance Medley Relay which was nationally ranked in 1998.
Lindsey Miller is MU's school record holder in the triple jump both indoors and outdoors, having reset the outdoor mark this past weekend at the Big 12 Championships. There she finished seventh in the event marking her fourth all-Big 12 selection in the triple jump. She is a three-time Academic all-Big 12 First Team selection and is a member of the Student Advisory Council to the University of Missouri Department of Athletics. Miller is an accounting major and has earned a 4.03 cummlative GPA.
Ashley Wysong represents Missouri on the second team with a 3.9 GPA in psychology. In this her first full season of track at MU, Wysong was a NCAA All-America indoors in the 800m, finishing sixth at the national meet. She earned all-Big 12 status both indoors and outdoors in the 800, setting a new school record of 2:05.75 at this past weekend's Big 12 Outdoor Championships where she finished second. Wysong has already been accepted to the University of Missouri School of Medicine as a Conley Scholar and is Missouri's representative to the Big 12's Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
GTE Academic All-Americans are chosen through a nominating system which requires an athlete to have maintained at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA while succeeding at a high level in their specific sport. Strong, Miller and Wysong join Missouri cross country and track runner Ann Marie Brooks, who was named to the District VII GTE Academic All-America Winter At-Large Team earlier this year.
