Tigers Continue Success in Pool

COLUMBIA, Mo- The Missouri women kept a grasp on first place on day two of the Indiana Invite on Saturday in Bloomington, Ind. The Tigers broke four school records and lead the host school, Indiana, by 31.5 points heading into the final day of competition on Sunday. In the meantime, the men continue to hold their own as the Tigers are in third place trailing South Carolina and Purdue.

The MU women got off to a good by placing three swimmers in the top eight in the 400 individual medley. Sophomore Kara Bramer improved on her career-best time (4 minutes, 31.26 seconds) to place fifth while Tawney Larm and Amanda Smiley finished seventh and eighth respectively.

Things got even better for theTigers in the next event, the 100 butterfly. Sophomore Jeanna Willi won the event and took down the 19-year old school record with a time of 56.26 seconds. Freshman Krista Davis placed fourth in the event and junior Rikki Janes and senior Bethany Biaett placed fifth and eighth.

The Missouri freshman duo of Molly Vetter and Katie Mae Fields put on a show in the 200 freestyle. Vetter finished second in the event and broke the school record with a time of 1 minute, 51.70 seconds. Fields now holds the third fastest time in school history with her third place finish in a time of 1 minute 52.87 seconds.

Tawney Larm took claim to holding four different school records as she placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke in a school-record time 1 minute, 5.21 seconds. Larm now holds both the 100 and 200 breast records as well as both individual medley records as well.

Rikki Janes finished second in the 100 backstroke while senior Christy Voelker placed seventh. Then, in the final event of the evening, it was the 800 freestyle relay team of Fields, Tara Brooks, Cristina Souza and Vetter winning the event, and breaking the school record with a time of 7 minutes, 32.71 seconds.

The Missouri men had a solid meet as well. Senior Mike Miller was a third place finisher in the 100 butterfly in a time of 49.56 seconds. Sophomore Mike Cervenka was a surprise winner in the 200 freestyle.

The Missouri breaststroke team of Aaron Lo, Mike Tucker and Ryan Ruddy put together a huge race in the 100 breast. The threesome placed second, third and fourth respectively with Lo moving up to third on the all-time list. Tucker, Ruddy and Lo now hold the top three times in school history in that order.

Chris Peters wound up a solid day for the men with a fourth place finish the 100 backstroke.

Both teams are back in action for the final day of the Indiana Invite beginning with prelims at 11:00 a.m. and the finals at 6:00 p.m.
