Columbus, Ohio - University of Missouri golfer DAVID SUGGS (70-71-75=216) shot a three-over-par 75 on Saturday - his highest round of the three days - and missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships by one shot.
Suggs, a junior from St. Charles, Mo., was tied for the individual lead after two rounds of the NCAA Central Regional at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course.
His final-round score of 75 enabled Ball State's Jamie Broce and Tulsa's Martin Maritz to catch him for the two at-large individual berths in next month's NCAA Championship that will be contested June 2-5 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. Broce and Maritz both fired two-under 70s on Saturday to finish with three-round scores of 215.
Defending NCAA champion James McLean was the individual medalist with a score of 212, leading his Minnesota Golden Gophers to the team title. McLean was one shot better than Northwestern's Luke Donald, whose Wildcats finished three shots behind the Gophers.
Other team qualifiers were Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Houston, Toledo, Illinois, Arkansas, Kansas and Colorado. Colorado won a one-hole playoff over Kent to claim the final team berth.
Broce and Maritz tied for third place. Suggs, who was attempting to become the first Tiger men's golfer to advance to the NCAA finals since John Utley in 1990, tied for fifth place with D.A. Points (Illinois), Daniel Fox (Arkansas-Little Rock), David Shaffer (Northwestern) and Wade Ormsby (Houston).
