Peterson and Wysong Provisionally Qualify for MU Track

February 7, 1999

Ames, Iowa - All-American Derrick Peterson (800m) and Ashley Wysong (800m) gave performances Saturday at the Cyclone Invitational that have provisionally qualfied them for the NCAA Championships. The three join Adam Ford (high jump) and Carlos Posey (55m) as Tigers who have provisionally qualified this season. Also another school record was broken on Friday, as junior Nick Smith eclipsed the 5,000m mark, finishing the race in 14:29.79. Team scores were not kept at the meet, though MU earned several good showings in a wide range of events.

Peterson, who is a three-time All-American in the 800m, indoors and outdoors, raced to a third place finish with a 1:48.37 time. The mark for provisional qualification in the men's 800m is 1:50.40. Ashley Wysong provisionally qualified for her second straight year. The sophomore from Nevada, Missouri, ran a 2:08.76 800m to also finish in third place and pass the 2:09.50 standard set for provisional qualification in the women's 800m.

The men's 4x400m relay team of Chad Shade, Kristian Fagerland, Derrick Peterson, and Thomas Woods raced to a time of 3:10.91. Their effort was very near the provisional requirement but due to adjustments made due to track size, the team came up just short.

Smith's run for the MU record was nearly seven seconds better than the old mark of 14:36.56 set last year by All-American Ray Hughes at the Missouri Invitational.

Missouri will host the All-Comers meet this Saturday, February 13. Registration begins at 8am and registration for 5000m, 55m hurdles, and 55m dash must be completed by 8:30am. Also registration for the mile run, 400m dash, 800m run, 200m dash, 3000m run and 4x400m relay must be completed by 11:00am.
