Missouri Takes First Game in Iowa State Series

April 30, 1999

The Missouri Tigers (29-15, 11-11) have now won 15 of their last 17 games as the Tigers defeated the Iowa State Cyclones (16-29, 1-21) by a score of 9-1 at Simmons Field. In front of 618 fans, the Tigers collected 13 hits and offered no errors to the Cyclones.

Missouri led 2-0 heading into the second inning, after Jon Williams (3-for-5, 3 RBI) singled to center field. J.R. Warner (4-for-4, RBI) and W.T. Hoover both scored on the play. The Tigers upped their lead to 4-0 in the second inning, following two sacrifice flies. With two runners on, Mike Rallo hit a fly ball to right field, allowing Ryan Stegall (2-for-3) to cross the plate. Luke Cassis did the very same at the next at bat, allowing Nick Wilfong to score.

Iowa State got their only run of the game in the third inning off of a RBI single by Mack Paciorek. Spencer Allen was the lone scorer for the Cyclones. Following a scoreless fourth inning, Missouri came back to score one in the fifth. Warner scored on a RBI single by Jake Epstein (1-for-4, 2 RBI).

The sixth inning would be the most productive for the Tigers. Facing one out and three runners on base, Warner hit a RBI single to right field, sending Rallo across home plate. Williams mirrored Warner's at bat, putting Missouri up 7-1. The Tigers final run of the inning came off of a sacrifice fly by Epstein.

The final scoring inning was in Missouri's half of the seventh. The Cyclones' third pitcher of the evening, Darin Nelson, allowed two hits, putting two Tigers on base. Rallo then grounded into a double play that also tagged Wilfong out at second, but allowed Stegall to score.

Missouri pitcher Justin Stine (7-3) was on his way to pitching his fourth complete game but was pulled in the eighth inning. He faced 34 batters, giving up six hits and forcing 11 strikeouts. Mitch Kiler came in at relief for Stine. Facing four batters, he allowed one walk and struck out one.
