COLUMBIA, Mo.- University of Missouri women's basketball player Julie Helm was one of five players in the country voted onto the Gball Magazine's All-Inspiration Team. The junior from Washington, Ind. was one of 12 finalists for her outstanding work with youth throughout the community. The All-Inspiration Team "aims to honor those athletes that are leading the way for today's youngsters who aspire to be the greatest of the 21st century."
Fans throughout the country were able to vote for the 12 finalists on the Gball Magazine web site during the months of February and March. Helm, a third-team all-Big 12 performer, was joined by University of Tennessee standout Tamika Catchings, Aimee Copp of the University of Southern California, Lauren Fuller of Bentley College, and Maylana Martin of UCLA.
Helm's work in the Columbia community includes working with the Boys and Girls Club, Rainbow House and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Helm has also been a Special Olympics volunteer and works as an elementary school mentor.
"This is a tremendous honor for Julie and the University of Missouri," said Head Coach Cindy Stein. "She has been a true inspiration to so many young people. We are so proud of her and the national recognition that she has received by making a difference in people's lives."
Helm averaged 17.8 points per game for Missouri this season and is currently sixth on the all-time scoring list. She was an honorable mention Academic All-Big 12 selection.
