FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 22, 1998 -- The Davey O'Brien Foundation announced Thursday the top 10 candidates for the 1998 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, presented annually to the top college quarterback in the nation. The top 10 candidates, as selected by a nationwide panel of sportswriters and commentators, are (in alphabetical order): Michael Bishop, senior, Kansas State University; Tim Couch, junior, University of Kentucky; Daunte Culpepper, senior; University of Central Florida; Joe Germaine, senior, Ohio State University; Corby Jones, senior, University of Missouri; Shaun King, senior, Tulane University; Donovan McNabb, senior, Syracuse University; Cade McNown, senior, UCLA; Chad Pennington, junior, Marshall University; Akili Smith, senior, University of Oregon.
The winner of the 1998 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award will be announced on the 1998 Home Depot College Football Awards Show, 7:30 p.m. CST, Thursday, Dec. 10, on ESPN2. The program will be broadcast live from Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
The 1998 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Dinner will be held Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at the Fort Worth Club. Air transportation is provided by American Airlines, the official airline of the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.
Past winners of the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award include Jim McMahon (1981), Steve Young (1983), Doug Flutie (1984), Vinny Testeverde (1986), Troy Aikman (1988), Ty Detmer (1990, 1991), Danny Wuerffel (1995, 1996), and Peyton Manning (1997).
The Davey O'Brien Memorial Award was established in 1977 to recognize annually the outstanding college football player in the five Southwestern states of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. In 1981, the award was redirected to be national in scope but limited to the position of quarterback, the primary position of Davey O'Brien. Davey O'Brien led the 1938 TCU Horned Frogs to the national championship and was the first college player to win the Heisman, Walter Camp and Maxwell trophies in the same season.
