New Stadium on the Horizon
The target date to break ground for the new University of Missouri baseball stadium is still early June, 1999.
Two More Former Tigers to be Inducted into MU Hall of Fame
Former Missouri baseball greats Greg Cypret and Keith Weber have been voted into the University of Missouri Athletics Hall of Fame. They will be inducted on the weekend of Nov. 7 when the Missouri football Tigers take on the Colorado Buffaloes. The official induction will take place on Friday night, Nov. 6 at the Reynolds Alumni Center.
Cypret and Weber become the fifth and sixth individuals from the Missoui baseball program to be inducted since the development of the Hall of Fame in 1990. They join the likes of former head coach John "Hi" Simmons, Phil Bradley, Bob Schoonmaker, and Dave Silvestri. The 1954 National Championship team was also inducted in 1994.
Cypret lettered at Missouri from 1975-1978. He was a three-time All-American shortstop who's name remains a fixture in the MU record books. Cypret ended his career with a .356 batting average, which still stands as the 11th best figure in school history. His career 253 hits were a school record that stood for over nine years until Ryan Fry eclipsed that mark last season. Cypret remains in the top five in career at-bats, RBI and total bases. He also can found on the career runs scored, doubles and extra-base hits lists.
Keith Weber lettered at Missouri in 1963 and 1964 and still stands as one of MU's top pitchers of all-time. An All-American on the last Missouri College World Series team in 1964, Weber owns the NCAA record for career ERA with a miniscule 0.56 mark. Weber ended his career with a record 17-1. He recorded 142 strikeouts in 94 innings. In 1964, Weber went 11-1 with a 0.61 ERA. He notched 90 strikeouts in 88 1/3 innings.
Several Former Tigers Playing in the Big Leagues
Eight former Missouri Tigers played on the major league level this past summer. Three of those players earned promotions during the season.
Former MU great Aaron Jaworowski was promoted to Class A Fort Wayne by the Minnesota Twins. At last word, Jaws was hitting .265 with 3 HR and 26 RBI. Also moving up this year to Class A ball was Jeff Terrell. Terrell played for the Philadelphia Phillies affiliate Piedmont this past summer and is hitting .291 with 47 RBI.
Four players off of last year's team earned stints in the big leagues this past summer. Ryan Fry, drafted in the 24th round by the Kansas City Royals, spent the summer in Spokane, Washington where he hit .233 with 8 HR and 26 RBI. Also in the Royals organization but on the other side of the map is Griffin Moore, signed as a free agent and playing in the rookie ball in the Gulf Coast League. Moore was hitting .231 with 2 HR and 12 RBI.
Former MU pitcher Jeremy Callier had a good summer in Butte, Montana, although his numbers may not show it. Callier went 3-9 on the year with a 3.54 ERA while playing for the last place Anaheim Angels affiliate. Callier did record 78 strikeouts in 19 appearances while walking just 26.
Callier's former teammate Nick Schwieder started the season in the Northern League before the Anaheim Angels signed him and sent him to Boise, Idaho. Schwieder began the season in Evansville, Indiana.
Former Tiger and 1997 Florida Marlins first round pick Aaron Akin spent most of the summer on the shelf at Class A Kane County. Akin, 1-4 with a 3.66 ERA, fell victim to elbow inflamation in early June and has spent the rest of the summer on the disabled list.
Missouri Hall-of-Famer Dave Silvetri kept his major league career alive this summer with the Durham Bulls, the Class AAA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Silvestri was last hitting .277 with 8 HR and 56 RBI.
