George Edwards

During a long tenure with the University, Edwards served at various times as men’s basketball coach (1926-46), men’s golf coach (1926-41), sports information director (1942-44) and athletic director (1943-45). In basketball, he compiled a record of 181-172, and coached teams that won Big Six Conference titles in 1930, ‘39 and ‘40. He took the 1944 Tigers to MU’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Under his tutelage, three Tigers won all-America honors, and 13 made the all-conference team. As president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, he wrote the “Basketball Coaches Creed” that is still used by the NABC. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1973.
