Smith placed second in the shot put at the 1961 NCAA Outdoor Championships and placed eighth nationally in both 1960 and 1962. During the 1962 campaign, he won shot put titles at the nation’s three premier relay events – Texas, Drake and KU Relays – including a meet-record throw at Drake. In a dual indoor meet at KU’s Allen Fieldhouse in ’62, he bested the fieldhouse record held by legendary Gold and Silver Olympics medalist Bill Nieder. A native of Liberty, Missouri, he went on to a long career as a chemical engineer for the Bayer Corporation.
