In his current role, Brown provides leadership and oversight to Mizzou's Integrated Healthcare student-athlete service units of Sports Medicine and Psychology, as well as highly-regarded Mizzou Made program. He also leads Mizzou Athletics’ diversity and inclusion initiatives and helped found the Inclusive Excellence Mile in May 2017. Brown is the coordinator of S.A.F.E (Student-Athletes Fostering Equality), a student-athlete leadership organization designed to build community on campus and Columbia, and along with Director of Athletics Jim Sterk, founded the Mizzou Athletics Committee on Inclusive Excellence (or MACIE) in July 2020. He also serves as the sport administrator for Mizzou’s softball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s track & field and cross country programs.
Prior to returning to Columbia, he spent 16 years at Drake University, including a highly-successful run as Director of America’s Athletic Classic, the Drake Relays, from 2006-16. As an Associate Athletics Director at Drake, Brown also had oversight of the department’s athletic facilities, and served as sport administrator for the Bulldogs’ volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis programs. He originally went to Drake as an assistant track & field coach in 2000.
In his first tour of duty at Mizzou, Brown spent seven years working in various roles, including compliance coordinator (1998-2000), graduate assistant track & field coach (1995-97) and graduate assistant for the Total Person Program (1993-95). He has two advanced degrees from Mizzou, including a Masters of Public Administration (May, 1995) and a Doctor of Philosophy – Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (May, 2005).
Brown was a world-class high jumper who achieved six-time All-America status at Northwestern State University, and later was ranked among the US Top 10 during a successful professional career. In 1989, Brown was the USA outdoor high jump champion with a leap of 7'7", and the following year won the NCAA indoor high jump title with a leap of 7'8". He also earned a bronze medal at the 1998 Goodwill Games.
Brian and his wife Natasha, who is Mizzou’s Associate Head Track & Field coach working with the Tigers sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams, have three children, a daughter, Elle, and two sons, Quinton and Kristian. Elle is a senior on the Mizzou women’s track & field team.
