HISTORY OF JESSE HALL

Jesse Hall has served as the main administration building for the University of Missouri for 124 years. It was built to replace Academic Hall which burnt down in 1892 from an electrical fire. It is a Mizzou landmark and is one of five buildings on the MU campus that was designed by Morris Fredrick Bell of Fulton, Missouri. The building was named after Richard Henry Jesse, a former educator and the eighth President of the University of Missouri. The front steps of Jesse look out at The Historic Columns, which were the only pieces of Academic Hall left standing following the 1892 fire.

The dome of Jesse Hall stands a full 9 stories above the ground and is taller than Jesse Hall itself. A winged sphere originally mounted the top of the dome and now is on display on the second floor of Jesse Hall. The dome is tied to many Mizzou traditions. It lights up the night sky each night as it is illuminated in white. The dome was first lit in October 1987 to celebrate the sesquicentennial celebration. This new tradition will build on the history of Jesse Hall.
