Mizzou / Abilene Christian Post Game Quotes
Mizzou Women's Basketball Postgame Quotes: Mizzou 52, Abilene Christian 46
Mizzou Head Coach Robin Pingeton
Opening statement…
“Abilene Christian is a really good, solid fundamental team. I am really proud of our team, though. I don’t think the stats necessarily reflect the kind of team we have but we were able to find a way to get a win. We bent but we didn’t break. I thought we showed a lot of toughness on a tough night when our shots weren’t falling. We had some good looks early. We just kind of got in a battle against ourselves and we got a little bit frustrated but we stayed the course and found a way to get a good first win on our home court.”
On Sierra Michaelis’ 11 fourth-quarter points…
“You hope your seniors will step up in those situations and that they will show great maturity to be able to play in the present. You can’t do anything about the first 30 minutes of the game and you need to stay in the moment. I thought she did a really good job of coming in and creating some opportunities for us. She got some good steals and I really liked her attack. She made some tough shots and I thought that was huge down the stretch.”
On expectations for upcoming games…
“My expectations are that night in and night out, we are going to go out there and play as hard as we can possibly play. We are going to take a lot of pride in the front of the jersey and we are going to have locked arms. We are going to have great chemistry out there on the court and we’ll play unselfish basketball. We are going to dominate 50-50 balls and we are going to compete on the boards and whatever happens from there, happens. Obviously you play the game to win, but for me, we are not as focused on the wins and losses as much as we are on our approach night in and night out. When the season is done, we want to say that we played the best basketball that we were capable of playing and the results will take care of themselves.”
Mizzou sophomore forward Cierra Porter
On her reasons behind wearing the No. 4 jersey….
“I did that in high school when my sister got injured, and it's really just to honor her and remind myself that I need to go out and play for her because she doesn’t get the opportunity to, and that should drive me to play harder.”
On taking the court without her sister Bri, who is out for the season with a knee injury…
“It was definitely on my mind at the beginning of the game. I was telling myself, “This one’s for Bri. Go out there and do it for her, because she can’t.” I think that did motivate me and will continue to throughout the season.”
Mizzou sophomore guard Sophie Cunningham
On handling Abilene Christian’s quick defensive rotations and closeouts…
“I wouldn’t necessarily say it bothered us, because it allows us to drive and kick it out. Credit to them, I think they played some really good defense, but we had really good ball movement and our shots clearly weren’t falling tonight. We stuck it out and got the win, and that’s all that matters.”
