Sophomore Sophie Cunningham
On role this year…
“It’s our first game so we are still trying to figure that out, but we have some good young players. We still have a young team, but our older people are starting to get healthy again. I am just trying to go out there and give people energy, communicate, and just get the team going.”
Redshirt senior Lindsey Cunningham
On having shots fall tonight …
“I have never been someone to really get caught up in points or stats in general, but I do realize when the shot is open I have to take it and luckily they were falling tonight. It was
nice to see work in the gym pay off, but it is going to look different night to night. Every single player on our team I think could step up on a different night, and the ball seemed to be falling for me tonight.”
Head Coach Robin Pingeton
Opening statement…
“We have a lot of work to do but we knew we did. I’ll be honest with you that we have gotten after it the last couple of weeks and going into this game we were extremely fresh but at the same time we have a lot of work to do on the defensive end especially. I think our rotations and the energy on the defensive side has got to get better and we need to do a better job limiting second-shot opportunities and with our communication but that is what is exciting. This is what exhibition games are all about; measuring yourself up and seeing what you need to focus on over the next week and a half in practice. I think this team has a lot of the pieces and it is going to take some time to get everyone to gel together out there and feel comfortable enough to get into a rhythm. There were some positives in a lot of areas that we can get better at and we will.”
On performance by freshmen…
“I think it is important that everyone gets a chance to get out there and get their feet wet. It’s a tough balance between wanting to execute and look great on every possession and trying to be mindful of looking at some different lineups and rotations. I thought Amber Smith had her moments, which was pretty similar to what we have seen in practice but there were definitely some inconsistencies. I thought Jordan Chavis had some moments but again some inconsistencies, which is typical for a freshman. Jordan Roundtree is one of our most athletic kids. She is a tremendous rebounder and she can really guard but we just need to shore her up in some areas but she is going to be really good for us.”
On preseason rankings…
“It means a lot. It’s the first time we have been ranked in the preseason since 1984. We have worked very hard to build this program and it is something that we are really proud of. We are excited about it. We all know that it is about where you are at the end of the season. It’s not one of goals to enter the season in the Top 25 but I think it shows the kind of respect that people have for our returning players and what we have built as a program. We’ve got the pieces and that is where I expected we should be in the preseason. We have a lot of work to do and most importantly that is where we want to be at the end of the season.”
