What is an Academic Tutor?
Academic Tutors are expected to facilitate the learning process through content-based knowledge, study strategies, time management, and professionalism. Academic Tutors are expected to fulfill all the policies and procedures required of the tutoring program. As an employee, professional conduct is expected through following the moral and ethical standards of the University of Missouri.
Purpose
Academic Tutors teach student-athletes how to develop skills that will be beneficial throughout their lives. Tutoring sessions should emphasize the following:
What is an Academic Mentor?
Student-athletes are faced with busy schedules consisting of classes, practices and homework. The Academic Mentor is a resource to help them organize a plan that will make the student-athlete successful in the classroom and in life. The Academic Mentor assists the student-athlete with time and stress management, study skills and test taking strategies. The Academic Mentor will also help the student-athlete in setting short and long term academic goals.
Mentor Goals
The following represents specific goals of the program:
- Assist with identification and formulation of that week’s plan, so the student-athlete is clear on the task at hand.
- Introduce and refine various need-based study skills and outlined objectives, including time management, organization skills, etc.
- Serve as an academic role model for the student-athlete.
- Help to foster an environment in which academic and social success are both desired and achieved.
What is the difference between an Academic Mentor and an Academic Tutor?
An Academic Mentor is there to assist student-athletes in organization and to guide them as they grow during the semester. The Academic Mentor may assist mentees in their courses, but their primary responsibility is guiding the student-athlete in achieving his or her overall success.
An Academic Tutor guides student-athletes content-based knowledge of the actual course material.
