Post-Eligible/Medically Exempt/Former Student-Athlete Funding Policy
The objective of the MU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics' post-eligible funding program is to provide assistance to student-athletes completing degree programs following exhaustion of athletic eligibility.
Student-athletes interested in post-eligible funding must request funding by completing the Post-Eligible/Medically Exempt/Former Student-Athlete Scholarship Application through the team's assigned academic coordinator. Requests are due at to the conclusion of the academic year in which athletic eligibility is exhausted. Those who have previously received post-eligible aid must apply each year. The Total Person Program staff reviews the appropriateness of the requested hours, including degree applicability. The head coach then approves or denies the request prior to further consideration. Student-athletes, whether participating in head count or equivalency sports, will receive the same percentage of aid as that was awarded during the final year of eligibility, as calculated by the Assistant Director of Compliance for Financial Aid. Exceptions to this policy may be made at the discretion of the Executive Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance, the Senior Associate Director of Student Services and the Executive Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator upon written request of the head coach. Agreements regarding an increase in post-eligible financial aid shall not be made without prior approval. Consideration for approval may include class and study hall attendance, use of mentors and tutors, and may be contingent on missed exams or assignments and failing grades resulting from documented lack of effort.
At the time of award, student-athletes shall sign a Contract for Non-Competing Scholarship Student-Athletes, which includes conditions for continuing aid. A copy will be provided to the student-athlete. At the discretion of the Assistant Athletics Director for Academics, additional conditions such as class attendance or study hall may be imposed. Failure to adhere to these conditions may result in the withholding of aid at any time. Student-athletes will be expected to assist their sport programs or other requested athletic department programs (i.e., Total Person Program, Life Skills) as reasonably requested, up to 10 hours per week in-season and eight hours per week off-season.
Post-eligible aid is awarded for one semester with renewal contingent upon academic progress. Post-eligible student-athletes graduating in December will not be renewed for the spring as described in the contract.
Post-eligible student-athletes who have participated in professional athletics must have their status reviewed by the Associate Athletics Director of Compliance prior to receiving aid.
A student-athlete whose post-eligible funding request is denied may appeal the denial to a committee composed of the Executive Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator, the Senior Associate Director of Student Services, the Executive Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance, and the head coach or designee. All decisions of the appeal committee are final.
