The presence of former Missouri Tiger Baseball players in professional baseball continues to grow each year. In 2012, four more players signed contracts. That brings the number of former MU players signing pro contracts to 169. Mizzou Head Coach Tim Jamieson has seen 57 players in his 16 years as head coach sign pro contracts.
As many as 20 former Mizzou greats have made it through the ranks and onto Major League rosters. Tim Laudner played for the 1987 World Champion Minnesota Twins. Phil Bradley played for several big league teams in 1980s and early '90s. Last year, four former Tigers spent times in the Major Leagues, including three-time Texas Rangers All-Star selection Ian Kinsler, and St. Louis native Max Scherzer, who played in last year's World Series with the Detroit Tigers.
Scherzer became the highest ever draft pick in MU history when he was selected by Arizona with the 11th overall pick in 2006. In 2008, Aaron Crow replaced Scherzer as the highest ever Tiger draft pick, when the Washington Nationals drafted Crow with the ninth pick. Crow did not sign with Washington and re-entered the draft in 2009, where he was taken by the Kansas City Royals with the 12th pick. Ten picks later Kyle Gibson was drafted by the Minnesota Twins, marking the first time in school history that two Tigers were selected in the first round of the draft. Five Tigers - including Gibson and Texas Ranger Nick Tepesch - are on 2013 Opening Day rosters.
