COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou baseball fell to SIU-Edwardsville 11-5 in a non-conference mid-week matchup on Tuesday night at Taylor Stadium.
The Tigers (20-21, 3-15 SEC)) pitched by committee, with redshirt freshman Dane Bjorn making his first career start, allowing no runs on two hits in three innings pitched, along with a career-high three strikeouts.
Freshman RHP Sam Rosand took over in the fourth inning, carrying Bjorn's consecutive retired batter streak to a total of eight into the fifth inning. However, the success on the mound ended there as the Tigers' bullpen combined to allow eleven runs on eight hits, with just three of the runs being charged as earned.
Freshman Blaize Ward started the scoring early in the first inning via a lead-off home run – his second round-tripper of the year. An inning later, fellow freshman Juliomar Campos tallied an RBI double, scoring Eric Maisonet, who added an RBI hit of his own in the fourth inning, making the score 3-0 in favor of the Tigers.
In the sixth inning, SIUE (22-19, 11-4 OVC) answered, putting up a three spot, two of which came on a two-run home run, to tie the game at three runs apiece.
Mizzou regained the lead in the seventh inning on a Kam Durnin sacrifice fly, but an eight-run eighth inning from SIUE blew the game wide open. Cameron Benson offered a line-drive solo home run to dead central in the bottom half of the inning – his fifth of the year – in retaliation, but it wasn't enough to ward off the Cougars, as Mizzou suffered the 11-5 defeat.
NOTEBOOK
- Ward went 1-for-4 with a lead-off home run, the first for the Tigers since March 26, 2024 (Jackson Beaman, vs. Illinois). It was Ward's second big fly of the season, with both coming in the past four games (at No. 14 Oklahoma, April 17).
- Bjorn made his first career start on the mound. The redshirt freshman posted a career-high three strikeouts in three innings of work.
- Maisonet went 1-for-2 with an RBI, two runs scored and reached base in three different ways – single, walk and hit-by-pitch.
- Campos went 1-for-1 with an RBI double, marking the second two-bagger of the season for the freshman.
- Durnin tallied his 16th RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly.
- Benson went 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run, his fifth of the year, to give him his highest total since his freshman season (2022 while at Akron). The solo shot marked his first home run since March 27 vs. Texas A&M.
- Bjorn and Rosand combined to retire eight-straight batters at one point.
- Tyler Macon was on base three times with a single and a pair of walks.
- Peer notched his sixth stolen base of the season.
The Tigers stay at home and host No. 24 Arkansas for a three-game Southeastern Conference series beginning on Thursday night at 7 p.m. CT (SEC Network). All Mizzou baseball games can also be streamed on the Varsity Network by Learfield, with longtime play-by-play announcer Tex Little on the call and Matt Michaels providing color.
