COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball earned its fifth-straight win with a 5-1 victory over UAPB on Wednesday afternoon at Taylor Stadium. The Tigers completed the mid-week series sweep with strong pitching from freshman RHP Luke Sullivan and a steady bullpen performance.
After five scoreless innings, UAPB (4-6, 0-0 SWAC) plated the game's first run in the sixth following a wild pitch, but Mizzou (7-2, 0-0 SEC) bounced back in the bottom of the inning with base-hits from Isaiah Frost and Tyler Macon, followed by an opposite-field grand slam off the bat of Mateo Serna for his second home run of the season to bring Frost, Macon and Cameron Benson in to score, putting the Tigers up 4-1 through six innings.
With Macon's first hit of the day, he extended his hitting streak to eight-consecutive games and grew his on-base streak to 10 games, dating back to last season. He continues to rank among the national leaders in both batting average (.556) and RBI (20) from the top of the Mizzou lineup.
Serna extended the Tigers' lead to 5-1 in the eighth inning with an RBI groundout that brought Frost in to score, giving the junior catcher his fifth RBI of the day.
Freshman RHP Luke Sullivan had a strong outing in his first collegiate start for the Tigers, going 5.1 scoreless innings and surrendering just one hit while striking out five Golden Lions. Sullivan's start marks the ninth-consecutive game to open the season that Mizzou's starting pitcher has gone at least five innings. Jackson Sobel, Trey Lawrence, Sam Rosand and Ian Lohse relieved Sullivan, combining for 3.2 innings, allowing just one run on three hits and racking up six more strikeouts, with three of those coming from Lohse in his 1.1 innings of work.
NOTEBOOK
- Serna continued to heat up at the plate, leading the Tigers' offensive surge with a grand slam in the sixth, going 1-for-4 on the day with all five RBI for Mizzou.
- With Serna's home run today, he has now homered in back-to-back games and has driven in nine runs over the past two games.
- Frost had a solid day, going 2-for-3 at the dish, with two singles and a run scored.
- Macon went 2-for-4 at the plate, providing a pair of singles, a stolen base and a run scored. The redshirt-sophomore has reached base safely in 26 of his last 36 at-bats for a season on-base percentage of .609.
- Sullivan was effective in his first collegiate start after previously making two appearances out of the bullpen. He threw 5.1 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit while punching out five Golden Owls this afternoon for a career best in that department.
- With his start, Sullivan (5.1 IP) extended an impressive streak by the Mizzou pitching staff of getting at least five full innings in every start this season (nine games).
- Over the 46.1 innings thrown by Mizzou starting pitchers this season, Javyn Pimental (10 IP), Josh McDevitt (10 IP), Brady Kehlenbrink (10 IP), JD Dohrmann (11 IP) and Sullivan (5.1 IP), the group has combined for a stingy 2.14 ERA.
- Lohse finished the game out, tossing 1.1 scoreless, hitless innings and recording three strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.
- Sobel (1-1) recorded the win for the Tigers, pitching one inning with a strikeout and one run allowed.
Looking ahead, the Tigers welcome the Bison from North Dakota State for a three-game weekend series beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday night at Taylor Stadium as they look to extend their winning streak.
