FORT MYERS, Fla. – Mizzou baseball bounced back with an exciting 5-4 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday evening in game two of its three-game series in Fort Myers, securing its first win of the campaign.
Tigers right-handed pitcher Josh McDevitt had a strong performance in his first start of the season, tossing five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six Mountaineers.
The Mizzou offense had another hot start with an RBI groundout from freshman standout Blaize Ward in the bottom of the first inning, bringing Tyler Macon in to score for the game's first run.
The lead was extended in the second inning thanks to an RBI triple off the bat of Isaiah Frost that scored Cameron Benson from second base after he reached on a double, making the lead 2-0. Gehrig Goldbeck helped extend the Tigers lead to four, with a double to right field that brought Benson and Chris Patterson around to score in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Left-handed pitcher Kadden Drew entered the game in relief for the Tigers to start the sixth, going two thirds of an inning, giving up a run on two hits before right-handed pitcher Trey Lawrence came in for his collegiate pitching debut and got Mizzou out of a jam, keeping the score 4-1.
The Tigers had a chance to break the game wide open in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and just one out, but a strong effort from relief pitcher Kaden Kimble held the Tigers to just one run off a sacrifice fly from Macon that scored Patterson.
The Mountaineers made a push in the seventh inning, scoring two runs on four walks and one hit, cutting the lead to 5-3 before left-handed pitcher Ian Lohse entered the game with the bases loaded to record the third out of the inning, getting the Tigers out of the jam.
Lohse finished the game for the Tigers, going 2.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. The game ended in dramatic fashion as the Mountaineers had runners on first and third with one out in the ninth. The runner on first broke for second base, and Tigers' catcher Mateo Serna fired to second baseman Eric Maisonet, who then relayed to first baseman Jase Woita to catch a man stealing before Woita fired back home to Serna to catch a second runner stealing, ending the game.
