COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri soccer juniors Shania Spriggs and Brianna Buels recently returned from the Black Student-Athlete Summit from May 21-24 in Chicago, Ill.
The BSA Summit unites student-athletes, athletic professionals, and industry innovators for four days of dynamic programming. Participants engage in career development sessions, financial literacy workshops, and wellness activities designed to prepare them for life beyond sports.
"Going to the BSA Summit really stuck with me," Spriggs said. "Hearing everyone's stories made me think about my own path and how it's okay to start small. It reminded me that every step, no matter how small, can move you closer to the career and life you want. It's about showing up, staying focused, and being real with yourself and others."
"The BSA summit was very impactful because it provided a space where Black student-athletes were able to connect, share experiences, and also a way to develop leadership skills," Buels said. "What I learned from BSAA is how important it is to build connections and have those special bonds with people."
Spriggs and Buels learned from a panel of notable speakers that included Baron Davis, Batouly Camara, Chiney Ogwumike, Frank Ryan, Jemele Hill, Lesley Slaton-Brown, Matt Barnes, Renee Montgomery, Rich Paul, Solomon Hughes, Brandon Coleman and Teahna DAniels.
Buels started in four games for the Tigers in 2024 and made appearances in 11 contents. She registered a goal against SEMO on Sept. 8.
Spriggs saw action in 10 games a season ago while making four starts. The defender guided the back line in two of the Tigers' shutouts and played all 90 minutes in Missouri's 3-1 victory over Oklahoma on Oct. 18.
