No. 9 Georgia Rallies to Claim Second-Straight Game from Baseball, 5-2
5/3/2025 10:56:00 PM | Baseball
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Despite 6 1/3 combined no-hit innings from Sam Horn and Brock Lucas, University of Missouri baseball came out on the short end of a 5-2 decision to No. 9 Georgia Saturday evening at Taylor Stadium.
In his first home start as a Tiger, Horn struck out a career-high five batters over his three hitless innings to open the contest, before Lucas closed out the evening by retiring all 10 Bulldogs he faced – five via strikeouts - over 3 1/3 scoreless frames.
Georgia (38-11, 14-9 SEC) benefited from an impressive mound effort from Kolten Smith (4-2), who fanned seen hitters while holding the Tigers to two runs on two hits over five-plus innings. Three Bulldog relievers – Alton Davis II, JT Quinn and Zach Harris teamed up to limit Mizzou to two hits over four scoreless innings to close out the victory and clinch the Southeastern Conference series win.
Mizzou seized the upper hand in the opening inning, using a two-out Kaden Peer single to jump-start its offense. Cayden Nicoletto followed with a two-run homer to right-center, which would prove to be the Tigers' only scoring in the contest.
Horn, who matched a career long with his 3.0 innings, worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the first, using back-to-back strikeouts to escape the inning unharmed. The right-hander also worked around leadoff baserunners in the second and third innings, racking up key strikeouts in each instance to complete his night after allowing just one walk and two hit batsmen.
The Bulldogs put their first run of the night on the board in the fifth after Nolan McCarthy and Robbie Burnett delivered doubles to make it a 2-1 game. One inning later, Tre Phelps drew a leadoff walk, and Daniel Jackson followed with a two-run, go-ahead homer off Tony Neubeck (0-3) to hand the visitors the lead.
Three additional walks and a hit batsman opened the door to what would swell into a four-run rally in the sixth. Burnett and Cade Brown each coaxed bases-loaded walks to force home the fourth and fifth Georgia runs of the game.
Lucas gave the Tigers (13-33, 0-23 SEC) a chance down the stretch with his shutdown effort out of the bullpen, recording the final out of the sixth before setting down nine more Bulldog hitters in succession from the seventh through the ninth innings.
But the trio of Bulldog relievers slammed the door on the Mizzou offense, teaming up to strike out seven hitters over the final four innings, as Georgia pitching allowed just four of the final 28 MU hitters to reach base safely.
Peer led the Mizzou offense with two of the Tigers' four hits on the night.
TIGER NOTEBOOK
- Georgia extended its series edge of the Tigers to 19-16 all-time with the victory.
- Jackson Lovich extended his reached base streak to 16 straight games by drawing a sixth-inning walk, but saw his five-game hit streak end with an 0-for-3 night.
- With five strikeouts over 3.0 innings, Horn surpassed his previous career high for strikeouts (3) and matched a Feb. 19, 2023 outing vs. TCU for the longest of his Mizzou career.
- Nicoletto homered for the sixth time in a Mizzou uniform and logged his third multi-RBI performance by driving in both of the Tigers' runs.
- Lucas worked 3 1/3 hitless innings, marking the second-longest hitless appearance of his career (4.1 vs. Kansas on March 19, 2024); he also topped the 100-strikeout plateau for his Mizzou career.
- The four Mizzou pitchers combined to strike out 12 batters, good for their top single-game total since fanning 14 Ole Miss batters on March 23.
