In one of the most competitive fields in the sport, University of Missouri men's golf put itself in position to contend for a quarterfinal bid after the opening day of action at the SEC Championship on Wednesday.
In a field that includes the top three teams in the nation and 10 of the top 20, the Tigers are 13th of 16 schools through 18 holes of play with a team score of +3. Mizzou is four strokes out of eighth place and qualifying for match play as the team finished ahead of No. 3 Texas (+6), No. 26 Tennessee (+6) and No. 18 Vanderbilt (+12) during the opening round.
Junior Virgilio Paz led Mizzou with a two-under 68 on the opening day. The best score by a Tiger at the conference championship since the second round in 2023, Paz carded four birdies on the day – against just two bogeys – as he sits in 14th of 78 golfers.
Freshman Trent Mierl was second on the team during the first 18 holes of action, finishing in 21st place with a one-under 69. In his SEC Championship debut, Mierl had just one bogey on the day with birdies on the third and 17th holes to finish second for MU on day one.
The second round of action is set for Thursday morning with Mizzou teeing off at 8:50 a.m. CT.
