
Trent Mierl Finishes 16th at General Hackler Invitational

Freshman Trent Mierl led University of Missouri men's golf at the General Hackler Invitational, recording another top-20 finish during his rookie campaign.
In a field that included six teams ranked in the top 50 nationally, Mierl improved his placement during the final 18 to finish 16th overall of 90 golfers. The freshman registered a final round tally of two-under 70 for a final score of -3 (72-71-70).
Mierl carded his second eagle in as many days to highlight his round with a three on the par-five fourth. He also added two birdies to go with 13 pars and just two bogeys on the day.
"I stayed really patient out there and stuck to my process," Mierl said. I've learned a lot from my teammates and coaches this year and it has helped me take steps into the right direction. This group of guys has a lot of potential and I look forward to seeing what we can do in the rest of the season. MIZ"
Overall, Mierl was steady throughout the tournament, recording two eagles and six birdies against just seven bogeys over the 54 holes. The result marked the fourth top-20 finish of the season for the rookie in just seven events.
While Mierl led the Tigers during the tournament, Mattias Varjun took the lead for Mizzou on the final day, improving his placement the most of any of the 90 golfers in round three. The graduate student carded a season-best 68 on the final day, topping his previous best this year by two strokes. Varjun recorded six birdies against two bogeys for his four-under tally, improving his place over the last 18 holes by 31 spots to finish 48th at +6 (77-77-68).
"Today was a really good final round for us," said Missouri head coach Glen Millican. "It was great to see Mattias play well and for Trent to finish in the top 20."
Brock Snyder (77-73-73), Virgilio Paz (71-81-75), Trevor Mierl (75-77-75) and Veikka Viskari (77-72-80) rounded out the tournament for Mizzou.
As a team, Mizzou posted its best score of the tournament in the final round with a two-under tally of 286 to finish 12th with a score of +12. Top-ranked Auburn won the title and was followed by No. 39 Louisville and No. 19 Duke.
The Tigers remain in South Carolina for their next tournament, opening play at the Hootie at Bulls Bay on Sunday.
